Blog 10: Senior Topic Update

What are you currently doing in your independent component?

Well for my independent component, I am using my practice time in the IPoly Fall Play to reflect on myself to how my companions and I are acting. For example, I'm trying to look at ever tiny aspect of those who know their lines and the frustration we can see, compared to those that know every line and have their acting down for it.

What is a recent piece of research that you have reviewed would you say was significant in helping you understand where to go next in your senior project?

I read an article called "Method Acting". It introduced me to what would not only become my essential question, but it made we want to really choose that style in the core of my research. On my other side, I have my new mentor - Gregory Cohen - who I have to meet with constantly and soon to research my topic. As an actor and a director, I'm sure there is much I can learn from his knowledge.

(Sorry for my late entry, it took a while to find the prompt.)

Blog #5B UPDATED

What is your topic?

Acting/Method Acting.

What is the driving problem behind your experiment and the quote by an expert to support that problem?

How does an actor rise above psychological problems?

They found that actors are more likely to struggle to discuss past traumas, suggesting that they find it harder to resolve emotional problems. "Even though there was no difference between the two groups for past traumatic events," the researchers wrote, "more actors were unable to maintain narrative coherence when discussing memories of past trauma and loss."
Thomson and Jaque go on to describe how, despite an increased ability to "remain engaged, regulated and coherent during the interview process," members of the actors group were more likely to display signs of confusion, prolonged silence or "unsuccessful failures to deny a traumatic or loss event". They argue that this suggests "a greater vulnerability for psychological distress". However, the study also suggests that the actors have higher than usual imaginative facilities than members of the control group.

Trueman, Matt. "Actors 'struggle to Resolve Emotional Problems'" The Guardian. Guardian News and Media, 18 July 2012. Web. 09 Nov. 2012. <http://www.guardian.co.uk/stage/2012/jul/18/actors-struggle-resolve-emotional-problems>.

What is your hypothesis?

The amount of time a person spends reading a play in inversely proportional to the amount of time they will spend rehearsing.

Write a paragraph summary of how you will perform the experiment. Include the tools you plan on using.

I will take a survey of IPoly's own drama club, or a survey of my mentor's show cast.

Select a Project Category for your experiment.

TITLE: Independent Component 1 Plan Approval

CONTENT:
(1) I plan on getting my hours through practicing in school rehearsals for the Fall play. That will help me in my studies of acting up close to the action. It will also help me learn the environment.

(2) I believe my plan will work because of the constant rehearsal schedule. There is much work to be done for a play. It will easily be enough to fill my ten hours.

(3) It will help me to research various methods I see from other actors to find what is the perfect style of acting. It will also allow me to experience firsthand, what I believe, is the pinnacle of acting's worth. A play. Where actors can really show off their methods and experiences.

Title:  Second Interview Questions
Label: Interviews
Due Date: Monday 10/1 at 8AM

Content:
The purpose of the second interview is justify your mentor as an expert in the field.  Thus, you will be asking at least 5 questions about their background and/or the background of the organization or company where they work.

1.) Being an actor/director, what would you say you most commonly have to do in your company/organization? (For example, the thing you had to recently do for it.)

2.) What company do you work for?

3.) How does this company/organization work? What does it do?

4.) How would you say working for this company/organization is? Is there something else you would plan to do not in the company instead?

5.) What is the background of the company/organization you work for?

Title: Working EQ
The Pentagon:
(1) Positive Statement: What positive thing happen as a result of what you have completed so far?

I was able to reconnect to my friends who are actually involved in the field. Not to mention, learn more about acting's backgrounds to help me understand what I wish to accomplish in acting.

(2) EQ Content:  Pick a piece of research or your interview.  How has it helped you improve your understanding of your topic?

My best piece of research was a voice acting blog that this man did. He was able to give a clear explanation of the history of voice acting, while not keeping it tied to just that subject. He told me what it takes to get in that field, and gave me a ton of research to understand my topic more, and introduce to the mix.

(3) What has worked for you so far in the senior project?

I was able to get an interview with a very nice man named Gregory Cohen. He supplied me with many helpful touches of insight during my interview with him. He was the proudest moment of my senior project.

(4) What hasn't worked so far?

Getting a true mentor. I have been around looking all over for Senior Project mentors, and all three oppurtunities have left me hanging by saying they would help me, but deciding that it took too much of their time or flat-out not calling me back/replying to me on Facebook.

(5) Finding Value:  Based on your experience so far,

  •  What possible question or questions come to mind regarding what you would like to study this year?
  • How would one make it so that they could act to their maximum extent? / How could one find a steady career in acting?

  •  What is your end goal this year with your senior project?
  • To be able to perform it to its maximum potential - to learn all I can and get a good grade. And my goal is to be able to learn all I can through this project, so that it may help me in future endeavors to become an actor.

  • Who would you like to talk to you next? Why?
  • I'd like to talk to someone else who is just as knowledgeable as Greg, and who could also possibly be my mentor on the Senior Project service learning.

Blog #5a: Science Fair Problem Statement

1) Senior Project Topic is Acting

2) A problem in Acting is the inescapable fact that the actors are not the characters themselves. Thus, how

much does one have to put in with effort, to convince the audience of their status as that character.

3) A problem in Acting is the fact that actors have problems determining speaking. One does not simply

know how to appeal to the audience because they are not the audience. An Actor has to take a guess at

what the audience wants.

Interview Preparation

1.
I still plan to interview my two mentors from my old summer lessons. I want them to be interviewed so badly, because they are comfortable around me and me around them. They also have a lot of knowledge about my particular topic.

2.
I plan to ask:

a.) How did you get started working in acting?

b.) How do you find the passion to work in acting?

c.) How many plays have you been in?

d.) How did you two find each other, work together, and finally marry each other?

f.) What would be something good for me to mention in my Senior Presentation?

Topic: Play Acting Entertainment

Content

a.
My topic is Play Acting. I chose this because Play Acting because not only is it one of the most famous ways of acting, but because I also know a lot about Play Acting from doing it over the years. I know that Play Acting is a tough subject, but I am confident I can fulfill Senior Project by doing it. For Play Acting has many interesting subjects that come with it.

b.
I plan to study every single aspect of this topic. I plan to make sure I take the time to fully comprehend my project. This relates to the me improving as a iPoly citizen because it will teach me to pay close attention and make sure what I am doing is correct. This relates to the me improving as a Communicator because of the plays' examples of public speaking as well as asking and questioning various people. This relates to the me improving as a Learner because of the mentors asking me to pay close attention to their instructions and learn as much as I can for the senior project. This relates to me improving as an Effective User of Technology by making good use of technology to get the full extent out of my senior project presentation, as well as recording all that I learn.

    Literal (Need to know)
I planned to find my mentorship by using my old sources. My first source was one of my grandpa's friends. However, after three weeks of trying to finally group with him and learn about how he acts, he decides to not do it. So, instead of it, I decide to actually go with my old mentors. I took acting lessons in the past, and it would be well do use them again. Their names are Jessica Nash and Jeremy Bernard. I went over to them in person at the Rancho Cucamonga Arts Center. They decided to actually help me out but they weren't doing any classes that summer.

   Interpretive
I think we need mentorship because we, the students, cannot learn from the computer websites as well as we can actually learn from actual people who have done it. So mentors can give us not only the knowledge, but the experience we need to actually perform the Senior Project to it's maximum potential. For example, we can pull up examples of what our mentor actually did in the situation we talked about. So in a way, it's a bit like a failsafe for us to use.

   Applied
Unfortunately, Jessica and Jeremy promised to help me after they got done with their play in San Diego. Sadly, they have yet to return still. So I just have to wait for them to return. But I am sure I can use them. If I have too much trouble with them however, I will just plan to find more sources from the listings people have put up.
